Speech Categorization in Linguistically Diverse Communities
An abundance of evidence now supports the concept that speech categorization is not categorical but gradient. Utilizing ecologically valid tools, we aim to determine how listeners exhibit this gradience in their categorization of speech. Our lab has adopted the Visual Analogue Task (VAS), a powerful instrument developed by our neighboring MACLAB (PI: Bob McMurray) and their collaborators, particularly Dr. Effie Kapnoula. The VAS is administered both online and in-person to study gradience in linguistically diverse communities.
